Spaghetti Sauce

1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic
1/4 lb hamburger
12 oz tomato paste
3 cans water (use tomato paste can)
2 tsp sugar
3 whole bay leaves
1 tsp fennel seed
Italian sausage links for each person


Peel garlic and cut in half. Sauté with onions in olive oil or butter. Do not brown. Add ground beef and cook only until the pink is out of the meat - do not over cook. Add everything else, including the sausage links. Bring to boil, immediately turn down eat and simmer a minimum of one our - I prefer using the slow cooker and simmering several hours, the last hour on high with the cover off to reduce liquid a little. The sausage links will flavor your sauce. I usually make a double batch of sauce and use 5 sausage links.
